It is in fact a rigid component with adhesive edges and a quality etched outline for the viewing area of your LCD screen providing a very professional finish. The clarity is excellent!
I placed the protector on the LCD screen of my Nikon Coolpix P100 which has the LCD glass without a surround. I turned the monitor on to help placement as suggested by the included instructions and I got it placed where the full image is visible. The viewable area has some margin for slight mis-alignment.
You only get one shot at applying the protector so take the time to do this right. The instructions does recommend a way to remove the protector but this is not something you want to do just for kicks. The overall thickness is about 1/2 a millimeter.
If you worry about cracking the glass of your camera's LCD monitor from handling, this is a nice product to add a little peace of mind to your outdoor adventures.
