(More customer reviews)I recently became interested in IR photography, but because I was not sure how well it would work with my Canon 60D, I wasn't about to spend $$$ on a high-end IR filter. I decided to give this filter a shot on my 50mm prime lens and was rather surprised at the results. First of all, don't expect amazing results from any IR filter on an unmodified digital camera. If you don't remove the hot filter (serious modification), you should expect 10-30 second exposures, so you are going to need a tripod and won't be taking photos of any moving subjects. Likewise, focusing is a challenge and unless you alter the white balance in your camera before shooting, you are going to have some work ahead of you in your chosen photo editing software as the original image will have strong red hues. As long as you keep these things in mind, however, you will be happy with this filter.
I initially bought this to see if my camera could even capture IR images. Now I'm purchasing a larger size filter from the same manufacturer for my other lenses. I'm not a professional photographer, but I do use L glass on my Canon, so image quality is important to me. Given the long exposures required for IR photos, I don't see more expensive glass making much of a difference as most of the image quality problems with my IR shots seem more related to noise and subject movement rather than optics.
Shipping wasn't speedy from New Harbor, but when it arrived, the filter was in good shape and performed better than expected. I recommend this filter to anyone looking to enter the interesting and challenging field of IR photography.
