To echo what is said about the new release SIGMA lenses - WOW.
Canon look out. I was shopping for a new toy for XMAS and settled on the CANON 14mm F2.8L lens. It was very nice but for the price hard to justify. I asked for an eval of the Canon and this, the Sigma alternative at 1/3rd the price. Head to head testing of the lenses on my Canon EOS 50 (ELAN) using ISO 200 film resulted in the Sigma producing a crisper image with better definition and colour saturation. Both lenses have a little "flattening" of the image at the edges as they try to compensate for curvature but the Sigma in my opinion is closer to true. Neither lens had any trouble Auto-Focusing during the day (Canon felt a little faster). The Sigma was a little unsure of itself on when I went for a night/bulb exposure of the starscape. Switched to Manual, set for infinity and away we went. My only other issue with the Sigma is the lens hood is not quite big enough where the Canon is spot on. Still you have to be looking really hard for faults to find them.
Tooling around with the lens has been lots of fun. I had never considered using the lens for indoors shots but it is magic. Architecture photography is going to be a new thing for me I think.

I love my Tokina. Its light and fun and I feel more confident with this then worrying about auto focus errors with the Tamron 17-35 that I also considered. I do a lot of research before i choose a lens and it seems people always have some quality control issue with the Tamron or Sigma brands, I know there are good lens from them but it makes me cautious when buying and if buying used or new. With Tokina i already had the famous 12-24 F4 and i chose it for its lack of distortion. This time i wanted to save money and add a lens to my bag that I can use with a 2nd body to have an extra backup wide angle for fun on FX and film and this fits the purpose just great. Its sharp at all apertures but more so stopped down. The distortion is very well controlled also. It gets really good reviews and comments from people way more expert then myself. check them out here:

This is the best wide-angle lens around for cameras with Nikon DX sized sensors. It's got great optical quality, and with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 it's faster than competing wide-angle lenses.
The only cautionary note I would add is that although the Tokina lens itself is built like a tank, Tokina lens caps seem to be less sturdy. At least, that's the conclusion I reached after the lens cap on my Tokina broke after my camera dropped a few inches onto a tatami mat in Japan. In looking at the broken cap, I wasn't too impressed by its construction with its tiny fragile looking, broken plastic clips. I now have a Nikon lens cap on the lens. If you get this lens, I suggest protecting your investment by buying a Nikon 77mm lens cap for it and ditching the one that comes with the camera.
